UMO: Jones has double-double as Trojan women defeat Barton

WILSON -- Kiara Jones posted a double-double and University of Mount Olive handed arch rival Barton a 78-71 loss on the Conference Carolinas women's basketball scene Wednesday evening.

Jones pumped in a career-high 27 points and snared 11 rebounds during the Trojan women's road win. Ni'Ya Styles and Daria Simmons contributed 18 and 15 points, respectively.

Barton held the lead for three quarters.

Back-to-back layups from Jones gave UMO a 52-48 advantage with 4:54 left in regulation. The Trojans scored 12 of the next 18 points and exited Wilson Gym with their 16th victory in conference play this season.

Mount Olive (19-5 overall) entertains Erskine on Saturday.

Women's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- Michaela Ciciarelli notched four goals as University of Mount Olive hammered in-state rival Chowan University, 19-1, in a non-conference women's lacrosse match at the Ray McDonald Sr. Track & Field/Lacrosse Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

UMO improved to 3-0 overall this season.

Jackie Kaderabak registered a hat trick (three goals) barely five minutes into the opening half. Teammate and freshman Kiara Burke also recorded her first-ever collegiate hat trick.

Saffron Snethen, Kelly Young and Kali Ferguson each scored twice.

Sophomore goalie Samantha Thompson claimed the win between the pipes.

The Trojans entertain Catawba at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Men's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive built an early first-half lead, but fell to Conference Carolinas arch rival Barton, 80-74, on Wednesday evening.

Jamal Matin emerged as the Trojans' leading scorer with a career-high 23 points. He pulled down six rebounds and picked the Bulldogs for three steals.

Tayon Gleaves and freshman Saiquan Jamison added 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Mount Olive (7-18 overall, 6-11 CC) plays host to Erskine on Saturday. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
