WINGATE -- A pair of former Wayne County prep softball stars helped University of Mount Olive upend in-state rival Wingate, 2-1, in eight innings during game two of their doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Southern Wayne alum Kelsey Hayes started the Trojan eighth at second base via the international tie-breaker rule. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Anna Ingram's double to left-center field.

Ingram, a Rosewood grad, ended the day 2-for-3.

UMO pitcher Emily Chaisson (2-1) shut the door on the Bulldogs in the bottom of the eighth. She yielded one earned on five hits and survived six walks.

Kayla Allen went 1-for-3.

Wingate claimed the opener 6-1.

Hayes led the Trojans' offensive charge with two hits. Allen, Ingram and reserve Caitlin Ewers each contributed one hit.

Kylie Ward started in the circle and left after two innings. Karen Foley threw the final four innings. The duo combined to allow six earned runs on 10 hits and three strikeouts.

Mount Olive (4-4 overall) returns home Thursday for a twinbill against Winston-Salem State.

Men's basketball 

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Freshman Saiquan Jamison snared a career-high 19 rebounds and University of Mount Olive snapped a three-game skid with a 75-72 overtime victory over Conference Carolinas men's basketball rival King College on Saturday afternoon.

UMO had 38 rebounds as a team.

Cameron Robinson led five Trojans in double figures with 16 points. Tayon Gleaves added 14. DeAndre Barber (11), Jamal Matin (12) and Tyler Thomas (10) also reached the double-figure plateau.

Matin and Gleaves dished out three assists apiece.

The Trojans (7-17 overall, 6-10 CC) return to action Wednesday at arch rival Barton. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at Wilson Gym.

Baseball

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Eastern Wayne alum Zack Mozingo and David Mayo each belted a home run and combined for six RBI as University of Mount Olive hammered out a 12-2 victory over No. 11-ranked Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon.

Austin Hutchison (2-0) permitted two earns on five hits and retired six FSU batters on strikeouts during a six-inning stint on the bump. Mozingo worked a scoreless seventh, while Ethan Horne fanned two Moccasin batters in one-plus inning of action.

Gunner Tolston and Jose Lopez had two hits apiece for the Trojans, who remained unbeaten in four outings this season.

Men's volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Robert Poole turned in a 19-kill performance and University of Mount Olive remained unbeaten on the Conference Carolinas volleyball scene with a 25-21, 25-23, 26-24 conquest of Limestone on Saturday afternoon.

Poole hit .361 -- .096 points higher than UMO as a team during the three-set affair.

Alex Palmatier contributed seven kills, while Joel Roberts knocked down four kills. Josh Donahue emerged as the defensive leader with 11 digs.

Jeff Yasalonis dished out 36 assists.

Poole pounded out 20 kills as the Trojans stopped North Greenville 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 on Friday evening. Palmatier supplied nine kills. Andrew Sydow, Bret Rutledge and Kian Hollovoet cranked out eight kills apiece.

Yasalonis and Shane Yeo combined for 47 assists.

Donahue posted 11 digs.

Mount Olive (7-4 overall, 6-0 CC) won for the seventh time in its last eight outings after an 0-3 start this season.

Women's basketball

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Kiara Jones notched a double-double -- 19 points, 14 rebounds -- during the University of Mount Olive's 74-61 loss to Conference Carolinas rival King College on Saturday afternoon.

Felecity Havens added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Trojan women, who endured just their third league loss of the season.

Ni'Ya Styles registered 14 points. Daria Simmons contributed seven points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.

King owned a 49-41 edge on the boards and outscored UMO 34-22 in the paint. Each team drew a technical foul.
