PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock pitched a fourth-quarter shutout during its 56-23 dismantling of non-conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday evening.
The Golden Falcons (5-0 overall) forced 38 turnovers and held the winless Chargers (0-4) to just four field goals over the final 25 minutes of regulation.
"We did a lot of talking about defense and making sure that we were moving our feet, not our hands ... reaching," said first-year CBA head coach Tangela Faulkner, whose team collected 22 steals.
"It just seemed like we frustrated their dribblers. Our defense was solid. We did a lot of anticipation on the passes, played well on help side and they couldn't get anything in the paint."
Tanika Powell dropped in 19 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out five assists and picked the Chargers for four steals. Lexi Edmundson contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while sharp-shooting guard Cassandra Lassiter knocked down 10 points and handed out five assists.
CBA had 13 assists on 19 field goals as a team.
The downside?
Faulkner's squad surrendered 12 second-chance points and committed 17 turnovers.
"There are some things that we need to clean up," Faulkner said. "Boxing out, we gave them a lot of second looks at the basket. We needed to put that body contact on somebody."
