VOLLEYBALL: Wayne Christian clinches CPIC title outright

GREENVILLE -- Mercy Wright pounded out a season-high 11 kills as Wayne Christian dumped Pope John Paul 25-21, 26-24, 25-17 and emerged as the outright Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season champion Thursday evening.
Wright also posted one block and served two aces for the Eagles, who clinched an automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.
Hannah Sladick knocked down 17 kills. Hope Shook contributed 10 kills, while Ashlee Harrelson had four kills. Holly Gurley emerged as the defensive leader with nine digs.
Kasey Norris doled out 45 assists.
Wayne Christian (20-4 overall, 9-0 CPIC) continues play Monday at Epiphany.
