Eastern Wayne 5,

C.B. Aycock 4

* PIKEVILLE -- Another nail-biter.

Same result.

For the second time in less than a month, Eastern Wayne edged county arch rival Charles B. Aycock, 5-4, on the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference scene.

The No. 1 doubles of Emily Sutton-Emily Uzzell and third-seeded duo of Bella Bowen-Samantha Roux helped the Warriors seal the outcome on the Luke Vail Tennis Courts. Sutton-Uzzell defeated Haley Creech-Hannah Tyndall 8-3, while Bowen-Roux upended Lexi Reeves-Michaela Boyd 8-4.

Sutton, Bowen and Roux each emerged victorious in singles. Bowen outlasted Tyndall 6-2, 6-7 (0), 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 5 flight.

The Golden Falcons' trio of Reeves, Meredith Jones and Grayson Lane each prevailed in straight-set fashion during singles play. Jones-Lane combined to hand the Warriors' Morgan Agner-Emily Stratton an 8-1 setback at No. 2 doubles.

"This was yet another great match between two tough teams," EW head coach Craig Hassell said. "Bella pulled out a great win over a very competitive Hannah Tyndall, which proved critical in giving us confidence and momentum going into the doubles. I can't be more proud of our team.

"We had many returners (five seniors with experience), talent and depth and our number one goal was to win the 3-A portion of the conference. All the credit goes to these young ladies as they fought hard all year, and especially twice against a talented and competitive Aycock team -- young and have a great crop of talent to work with in the coming years."

Eastern Wayne (7-6 overall, 7-4 ECC) concludes regular-season play Monday at New Bern.
