PIKEVILLE -- Just minutes before kickoff, first-year Eastern Wayne head soccer coach Scott Summers encouraged his injury-riddled team to set the tempo against arch rival Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday evening.
Joey Hampton took less than two minutes to destroy Summers' gameplan. The senior defender executed a perfect throw-in to Sean Doulin, who lofted a goal-scoring shot over EW keeper Bryan Morales and into the net.
"I was about to throw it to Coe (Jordan), but saw Sean out of the corner of my eye," Hampton said. "I just threw it to him and he finished it. (The goal) ignited us, upped the intensity. That's what we've been needing... that first goal to get us going and lead to other goals."
The Golden Falcons added a pair of second-half goals and dealt the Warriors a 3-0 loss in their Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference affair contested on the Hardy Talton Stadium pitch.
CBA picked up its fifth win against a county opponent this season.
"I told them at the very beginning that we need to set the tone, don't allow them to set the tone because coming from behind on a team that's strong defensively, it's not going to be easy to score today.
"They did a great job shutting us down."
David McIver and his backline mates -- Josh Naughton, Oscar Carcamo and Nolan Casey -- played as if they were guarding Fort Knox. The quartet permitted just five shots on goal and keeper Skyler Landers, the ECC's top goalie with a 0.60 goals-against-average, posted four saves.
Christian Anderson, EW's leading scorer with 27 points, managed just two shots on goal. One sailed over the crossbar by inches late in the opening half. Fellow striker Alfrado Cabrera didn't attempt a shot on goal.
The Warriors had just one corner kick.
"At the beginning, we man-marked Christian, stayed tight with him and tried to limit his possessions and keep him off the ball," McIver said. "He's a really great player. We played really tough defensively from the beginning and set the tone from there on out."
Aycock recorded its fifth shutout of the season.
And it got some much-needed breathing room within a two-minute stretch late in the second half.
Leo Carcomo got loose on a breakaway goal and was tripped up from behind by an EW defender inside the penalty area. McIver easily converted the penalty kick to make it 2-0 with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Two minutes later, Carcomo fed a beautiful one-touch cross inside the box to senior Zach Zacharzuk, who tucked it away toward the back post for the 3-0 finale.
The Golden Falcons (6-6-0 overall, 3-2-0 ECC) scored three goals in a game for the first time since August. Hampton and his teammates have been part of 10 shutouts, including six that have been decided by one goal, this season.
"We've had some trouble finishing," Hampton said. "But we did that tonight."
