CALYPSO -- North Duplin softball pitcher Rylee Pate has been named the MaxPreps.com South Region national player-of-the-week.
Pate threw her second perfect game of the season during a 3-0 victory over Gates County in second-round action of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs. The right-hander retired all 21 batters she faced, including 16 by strikeout.
Earlier in the week, the Rebels began defense of their state championship with a mercy-rule victory over KIPP Pride. Pate yielded one hit, logged 14 strikeouts and drove in four runs.
The junior has thrown seven shutouts and five no-hitters to go along with her two perfect outings this spring. Pate is 10-2 with a microscopic 0.42 earned run average in 67 1/3 innings of work. She's registered 154 strikeouts against 71 percent of the batters that she's faced.
Pate has tossed eight complete games.
North Duplin's defense has shut out 17 opponents and committed just 14 errors in 122 innings.
