MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive exploded for nine eighth-inning runs and cruised past in-state rival Chowan University, 13-4, in a non-conference baseball contest at Scarborough Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Leading 4-3, the Trojans drew back-to-back walks and Ricky Surum legged out a bunt single. Brandon Day singled through the left side to score Joe Koehler and Bradley Ragan. Zak Orrison drove in Surum and a Chowan fielding error allowed two UMO runners to cross the plate.

Stephen Wallace, David Mayo, Orrison and Alvin Swoope each collected an RBI later in the inning.

The Trojans ended the day with 15 hits as a team. Orrison batted 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Day wound up 3-for-5 with two RBI. Wallace and Koehler each had two hits.

Brighton Hudson earned the mound win in one-plus innings of work. He gave up three earned runs on four hits.

University of Mount Olive (30-19 overall) will make its seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals, which begin May 21 at an undetermined site. The pairings and regional host will be announced Sunday at 10 p.m. on ncaa.com.
