Golden Falcons soar past helpless Bears

PIKEVILLE -- One way traffic.

That's exactly what the basepaths resembled on Highway 117 north last night, as Charles B. Aycock levied a stampede of runners across the plate in a clinical, 19-4 mercy-rule conquest of New Bern.

The victory moved the Golden Falcons to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference this season.

In its first action since last week's Golden Leaf Invitational, Aycock wasted little time finding its usual form. Exhibiting no rust, the hosts plated six runs on four hits in a hyper-efficient, bat-around-the-order first inning.

The parade of powder blue included a pair of two-RBI singles by Cameron Kornegay and Bradley Pate, as well as two run-producing errors by New Bern.

It was a precise effort, and one that pleased CBA skipper Charles Davis.

"It's been a week since we played, (and a) conference game," Davis noted, "and I thought we did a good job of scoring runs and taking advantage of their mistakes."

And mistakes found the Bears aplenty.

New Bern was charged with eight errors on the night, six of which led directly to Aycock runs. The Bears also allowed CBA to load the bases an astonishing nine times.

After three inning, the Golden Falcons led 12-2.

The early outburst would be all the support needed by starting pitcher Kyle Davis, who was excellent in his seventh start of the season. The senior allowed just two runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Davis also fanned two New Bern batters.

"I was satisfied with the (pitching) effort," Coach Davis said. "If you don't walk people, you can put yourself in position to win."

It was a struggle for the Bears, whose lone bright spot was the play of Alex Hinson. The second baseman batted 2-for-2 with 2 RBI on the night. New Bern managed just seven hits as a team.

CBA's Jacob Sanford closed the door in relief of Kyle Davis.

"Those kids work hard," Davis said of his dugout, "Joey Hampton comes up and gets a base hit. Mason Watt gets two hits... and the guys (starters) are over here pulling hard for them.

"That's what we preach."

Aycock continues ECC play Friday at J.H. Rose.
