John Strickland swatted a solo home run as Wayne Country Day dropped a 12-1, non-conference loss to Oakwood on Thursday afternoon.
Oakwood pitcher Zarion Sharpe retired 11 Chargers on strikeouts and surrendered just two hits -- Strickland's sixth-inning blast and Amane Godo's single.
"I tip my hat to Sharpe and to Oakwood for the game they played and taking advantage of our mistakes," said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor, whose team surrendered eight runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth.
Wayne Country Day (5-3-1 overall) plays host to North Raleigh Christian next Thursday on opening day of the ninth annual Charger Diamond Classic. Halifax Academy and Wayne Christian meet in the other game.
