* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 10, Rosewood 0 (5 inn.) -- Carson Smitherman's one-out, three-RBI triple cleared the bases and invoked the mercy rule against the visiting Eagles on Tuesday afternoon. Smitherman ended the day 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBI. Sophomore Blake Gipson batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. Tyler Daniels, Jordan Gay, Kaleb Moore, Seth Harrison, Nick Aycock (two RBI) and Tyrie Artis (RBI) supplied one hit apiece. The Golden Falcons used five pitchers -- sophomore Caleb Matthews (three strikeouts), Luke Frederick, Smitherman (earned pitching win), Moore and Aycock (two strikeouts).
* Girls' soccer: Wayne Country Day 2, Community Christian 0 -- Janae Jones scored both goals in the Chargers' season-opening win. Hanna McKeithan and Nancy Chen each dished out one assist.
* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 4, North Lenoir 3 -- Justin Edwards emerged as the winning pitcher during the Warriors' road win Tuesday afternoon. Colby Miller, Jason Mitchell and Noah Frost collected two hits apiece.
Middle schools
* Softball: Crossroads Christian 8, Wayne Christian 3 -- Brianna Verme and Abigail Kornegay combined for 12 strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle. Crossroads managed just two hits in the game. Leah Boswell tripled, while Verme doubled for the Eagles. Kornegay, Elizabeth Howell and Abbe Harris had one hit apiece. Wayne Christian (0-2 overall) entertains Neuse Charter on Thursday.
