SEVEN SPRINGS -- A boxing match of similar nature would have been stopped.
Spring Creek attacked in the early minutes and easily defeated Hobbton, 84-41, in a Carolina 1-A Conference game Tuesday evening.
Led by junior guard Ashley Marriner (27 points), Spring Creek forced a total of 14 turnovers during the first two quarters en route to their fifth straight conference victory.
Senior Amber Buchan registered 24 points for the victors, who played everyone on their roster. The Gators held a 30-point lead on five occasions and finally invoked the mercy rule (a 40-point lead) with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game.
Spring Creek head coach Charlie Cotton was impressed.
"I wanted to keep the girls engaged," coach Charlie Cotton said of his team's effort, "and just keep them going in terms of intensity."
Senior forward Tysha Teachey, who battled all night with Hobbton star Nina Devone, listened to her coach's directive and put to rest any suggestion of a second half lull by registering 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Devone, plagued by early foul trouble, did her best to keep the Wildcats competitive. In just over three quarters, the senior center logged 21 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots. Fellow senior Shay Bell also contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
SC continues play Friday without junior wing guard Destiney Sutton, who suffered a possible ACL tear in the Gators' previous game. Her status remains unknown.
