DUDLEY -- Straight roads make driving simple, but turning corners takes patience and precision.
Southern Wayne used simple fundamentals to shut down New Bern's Teana Lewis in the second quarter. The plan helped the Saints build a 20-16 lead with four minutes left before halftime.
But New Bern outscored Southern Wayne 12-0 the rest of the quarter and eventually claimed a 59-43 win in their Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference game Monday evening.
"The girls (Saints) are getting better and improving, but they just can't turn that corner this year," said SW assistant coach Takisha Vann. "Hopefully, we can just get better each game and we can go ahead and turn that corner sooner than later."
Lewis stole the ball and drove the court for a layup at the start of the third quarter. Teammate and senior Diajah Hickson pulled down a rebound, drove the length of the court and scored.
Southern Wayne senior Zaria Atkins assisted junior Iyahna Bess with a jumper off of an inbounds pass. Bess grabbed the ball from the Bears, ran the court, made a layup and drew a foul. She sank the free throw, but the Saints trailed 45-31 after three quarters.
Bess ended the game with 18 points, while Atkins scored 14.
Southern Wayne (5-12 overall, 0-7 ECC) plays host to conference and county rival Charles B. Aycock on Thursday.
