Carmon has highlight show in Goldsboro's win

It wasn't a one-man show by any means.

But Goldsboro senior guard Myron Carmon certainly stole the spotlight during the Cougars' 73-54 win over Charles B. Aycock on Friday evening.

Carmon dunked off of an assist from senior Eric Bufkin, scored a 3-pointer and a jump shot off of crossover dribbles, and dunked off of an assist from senior Jaylin Thomas.

"Myron's a special player," Goldsboro head basketball coach Russell Stephens said. "He's a four-year varsity player, and his first game at home his senior year -- he put on a show for people."

The "show" started off slowly as the Cougars traveled, missed layups and jumped into foul trouble. The Golden Falcons took advantage of Goldsboro's unorganized play when senior Cameron Kornegay shot a 3-pointer, which gave Aycock an 8-4 lead in the first quarter.

"At first, we just couldn't get anything to fall," Stephens said. "It was kind of frustrating a little bit, but our defense still had us in the game."

The Cougars held the Golden Falcons to 21 points for four minutes.

Carmon shot two 3-pointers off of assists from junior Ronnie Tookes. Bufkin and Tookes hit jump shots as the Cougars passed by the Golden Falcons, 26-21.

Bufkin's jump shot rattled out just before halftime, but Thomas tipped the ball in for a 32-21 lead going into the third quarter.

Tookes stole the ball, and sprinted down court for a layup as the Goldsboro crowd sat watching. That all changed when Bufkin tossed up the ball for Carmon's first alley-oop with three minutes remaining in the third.

The crowd stood and screamed.

Senior Kisheem Faison shot a 3-pointer, and senior Nakia Atkins shot a layup and drew a foul. The Cougars soared to a 49-34 lead before the highlight of the night.

Carmon posted up in front of a CBA defender, dribbled left, then dribbled right for a 3-point shot. With 15 seconds left in the third quarter, Carmon crossed over around a defender for two more points.

Early in the fourth quarter, Thomas threw up the ball and Carmon slammed down his second alley-oop. The Cougars led 60-36.

The Golden Falcons fought back.

Juniors Damien Darden and Ellijah Bryant made jump shots and foul shots to pull their team to within 18 points. Junior Chandler Matthews stole the ball from Goldsboro and shot a jump shot with one minute remaining in regulation.

"Our goal coming into this game was to try and slow down and try and methodically move our offense," CBA head coach Dave Elmore said. "I feel like that was to our advantage. They're (Cougars) more athletic, and our team knows that. So for us to have an advantage in this game and have a chance to win this game, we had to slow it down a little bit.

"The third quarter got away from us a little bit."

Darden and Kornegay ended the game with 10 points apiece, and Ford had nine points and was 7-9 from the foul line.

Carmon ended the game with 24 points, while Tookes had 10 points. Bufkin ended the game with seven points.

The Cougars (2-0 overall) travel to Rocky Mount Prep on Tuesday, while the Golden Falcons (0-3) are the guests of North Lenoir the same evening.
