CALYPSO -- North Duplin's defense stopped Carolina 1-A Conference foe Hobbton inside the 1-yard line and pulled out a 14-7 overtime victory at H.E. Grubbs Field on Friday evening.
"Gosh, what a heck of a battle," said ND head coach Hugh Martin, whose team snapped a four-game skid in conference play.
"We couldn't punch ours in and they kept fighting. Defensively, we kept hanging on. It was a heck of a game ... a heck of a game. I was proud of us hanging in there. We could have laid down after we gave up that score.
"We just kept plugging away at it."
Emiliano Mora put the Rebels in front, 7-0, with a 1-yard touchdown burst less than four minutes into the second quarter. The Wildcats answered on Omar Farrior's 7-yard run with 2:58 remaining in the third period.
A late fourth-quarter gave the Rebels a chance to win in regulation, but they missed a field goal with six seconds to go.
North Duplin stopped Hobbton on fourth down inside the 1-yard line to preserve its all-important first league win of the season. The Wildcats finished with 131 yards of total offense on the night.
The Rebels (3-7 overall, 1-4 CC) conclude regular-season play next Friday at Spring Creek. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at "The Swamp."
