Boys' soccer

Rosewood 5, North Duplin 4 (OT)

* CALYPSO -- Tucker Chapin saved a penalty kick in the final two minutes of the second overtime, and helped preserve Rosewood's 5-4 victory over North Duplin the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Monday evening.

"Rosewood got the big plays when they needed them," second-year ND head coach James Foster said. "(They're) goalie made a great save. After last week's disaster, we played a solid game for 100 minutes."

The Eagles built a two-goal halftime margin on scores from Stalen Massengill and Daniel Alberto. Zack Barnes assisted on Massengill's goal, while Alberto converted a free kick.

Barnes scored Rosewood's lone second-half goal on an assist by fellow senior Ethan Chapin.

Dario Castenada and Juan Garcia combined for three second-half goals to force the two 10-minute overtime sessions.

Chapin's goal off of Barnes' assist put Rosewood in front 4-3. Garcia notched the equalizer in the 89th minute. Barnes punched in the game-winning goal on Alberto's assist from in the second OT.

ND goalie Luis Martinez logged 17 saves.

Rosewood (14-5-1 overall, 11-2-1 CC) returns to action next week in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs. North Duplin (10-8-1, 6-7-1) finished fifth in league play and hopes to earn a wild-card berth in the 32-team eastern draw.

Charles B. Aycock 1, J.H. Rose 0

* GREENVILLE -- Leo Carcamo tallied the game-winning goal with 20 minutes left in regulation, lifting Charles B. Aycock past J.H. Rose, 1-0, in an Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference game Monday evening.

Goalie Skylar Landers recorded 10 saves for the Golden Falcons, who improved 15-4-2 overall and 7-3-1 against ECC opposition this season.

Weather permitting, Aycock concludes regular-season play at home Wednesday against Eastern Wayne.

Goldsboro 4, Ayden-Grifton 1

* LITTLEFIELD -- Ruben Quiroz delivered a hat trick (three goals) as Goldsboro upended Ayden-Grifton, 4-1, on the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference scene Monday evening.

Aaron Podbielski contributed one goal.

Aaron Seate provided one assist.

Goldsboro goalie Chandler Patrick recorded five saves.

The Cougars (10-9-0 overall, 6-3-0 ECC) conclude regular-season play at home Wednesday against Greene Central.

Girls' tennis

Match postponed

* Wayne Country Day will wait an extra two days to launch defense of its N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team championship.

Rain postponed the first-round match.

The top-seeded and once-beaten Chargers will entertain University Christian on Thursday. First serve is 2 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.

It's the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Burton fifth overall

* SOUTHERN PINES -- Rosewood senior Lindsey Burton finished fifth among 78 individuals after opening-round play of the 2015 N.C. High School Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A championships Monday.

Burton shot an 82 on the Longleaf Golf and Country Club links.

Ellie Porman of Stuart Cramer is the overall leader at 4-over-par 72. West Davidson and Gray Stone Day share the team lead with identical three-player scores of 267.

The 36-hole event concludes today.

CBA's Sauls battles

* FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- Charles B. Aycock sophomore Abby Sauls is tied for 63rd overall after first-round play in the 2015 NCHSAA Class 3-A championships.

Sauls shot an 18-hole round of 101 on the Red Fox Course at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.

Chapel Hill's Gina Kim emerged as the first-day leader with a 4-under-par 68. Defending state champion Siranon Shoomee off Lee County and North Buncombe's Callista Rice are tied for second at even-par 72.

Terry Sanford holds a five-stroke lead over Rockingham County in the team portion of the compeition.

The 36-hole event concludes today.

Prep football

State finals set

* CHAPEL HILL -- Interim N.C. High School Athletic Association commissioner Que Tucker the game times for the eight NCHSAA football championship games for the 2015 season on Monday.

Eight state champions will be determined at three sites -- Kenan Stadium (UNC), Carter-Finley Stadium (Raleigh) and BB&T Field (Winston-Salem).

Kenan returns to the rotation after a one-year absence. The facility will play host to two games -- one on Friday and one on Saturday afternoon. The 3-A final is 7:35 p.m. on Friday and the 3-AA title game is slated for 12:05 p.m. kickoff.

The 4-AA championship is 12:05 at Carter-Finley, followed by the 2-A final at 4:05 p.m. and the 2-AA championship at 8:05 p.m.

The 1-A and 1-AA games, along with the 4-A title clash, will be contested at BB&T Field.
