Carolina 1A soccer: Rosewood escapes N. Duplin

CALYPSO -- Tucker Chapin saved a penalty kick in the final two minutes of the second overtime, and helped preserve Rosewood's 5-4 victory over North Duplin the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Monday evening.
"Rosewood got the big plays when they needed them," second-year ND head coach James Foster said. "(They're) goalie made a great save. After last week's disaster, we played a solid game for 100 minutes."
The Eagles built a two-goal halftime margin on scores from Stalen Massengill and Daniel Alberto. Zack Barnes assisted on Massengill's goal, while Alberto converted a free kick.
Barnes scored Rosewood's lone second-half goal on an assist by fellow senior Ethan Chapin.
Dario Castenada and Juan Garcia combined for three second-half goals to force the two 10-minute overtime sessions.
Chapin's goal off of Barnes' assist put Rosewood in front 4-3. Garcia notched the equalizer in the 89th minute. Barnes punched in the game-winning goal on Alberto's assist from in the second OT.
ND goalie Luis Martinez logged 17 saves.
Rosewood (14-5-1 overall, 11-2-1 CC) returns to action next week in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs. North Duplin (10-8-1, 6-7-1) finished fifth in league play and hopes to earn a wild-card berth in the 32-team eastern draw.
