3A state golf finals: Sauls battles in opening round

FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- Charles B. Aycock sophomore Abby Sauls is tied for 63rd overall after first-round play in the 2015 NCHSAA Class 3-A championships.
Sauls shot an 18-hole round of 101 on the Red Fox Course at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club.
Chapel Hill's Gina Kim emerged as the first-day leader with a 4-under-par 68. Defending state champion Siranon Shoomee off Lee County and North Buncombe's Callista Rice are tied for second at even-par 72.
Terry Sanford holds a five-stroke lead over Rockingham County in the team portion of the compeition.
The 36-hole event concludes today.
