University of Mount Olive -- Weekend wrap

MOUNT OLIVE -- Ellie Barnes notched the eventual game-winning goal in the 30th minute and University of Mount Olive handed in-state Conference Carolinas women's soccer rival Lees-McRae a 2-0 loss on senior day.

Barnes scored on Nichole Poppe's assist.

Niza Vera provided an insurance goal in the 68th minute off of an assist from Barnes.

UMO held a 9-8 edge in shots on frame. The Bobcats attempted 10 corner kicks compared to five for the Trojans. UMO keepers Kelsey Cirrito and Stephanie McCoy combined for eight saves and the shutout between the pipes. Cirrito earned her first win of the season.

The Trojans (7-3-2 overall, 6-1-2 CC) put their season-high six-match win streak on the line Wednesday at in-state Southeast Region foe UNC Pembroke.

Men's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Lees-McRae scored twice within a two-minute stretch and upended University of Mount Olive, 2-0, in a Conference Carolinas game contested at Amon Field.

The Bobcats broke a scoreless draw in the 72nd minute and collected an insurance goal in the 74th.

Malick Chune attempted five shots for the Trojans, who dipped to 7-6-0 overall and 5-3-0 against conference opposition this season.

Mount Olive visits league rival Limestone (S.C.) College next Saturday.

Women's volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Alysha Burnett cranked out a team-high seven kills as University of Mount Olive endured a 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 loss to in-state Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey.

It was the final regular-season home match for three seniors -- Nicole Karas, Morgan Morrissette and Danielle Plante. Morrissette ended the day with a match-high three blocks.

Samantha Winfield served two aces and picked up eight digs. Burnett and Britni Johnson each posted 11 digs on defense.

Karas passed out 15 assists.

One night earlier, Winfield recorded a match-high 18 digs and served five aces in the Trojans' 26-24, 25-22, 25-19 conquest of Pfeiffer University.

Burnett and Johnson combined for 18 kills. Johnson had 11 digs, while Karas notched a double-double -- 14 assists, 10 digs. Danielle Stachura passed out 14 assists.

Mount Olive (4-16 overall, 3-7 CC) entertain Winston-Salem St. on Wednesday. First serve is 7 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
