C.B. Aycock nets win over New Bern

NEW BERN -- Charles B. Aycock emerged victorious at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, and upended New Bern, 5-4, in a pivotal Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference match Wednesday afternoon.
It was the Bears' first loss in ECC play this season. The teams had to complete the match under the lights at New Bern Golf and Country Club.
The Golden Falcons' No. 2 duo of Sabrina Johnson-Casie Belom handed Caroline Murphy-Emily Thompson an 8-6 defeat. Teammates Meredith Jones-Grayson Lane escaped Hannah Smith-Lane Welborn in 9-8 (9) tiebreaker.
Tiebreakers decided four matches on the day.
Johnson, the No. 1 singles seed, responded with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) conquest of Murphy. Lane outlasted Brynne McCormick 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) at No. 5 singles.
Jones topped Hannah Smith 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
New Bern prevailed at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles; and No. 1 doubles.
C.B. Aycock is the guest of county archrival Eastern Wayne today.
