MOUNT OLIVE -- Nearly 200 golfers teed it up on the Southern Wayne Country Club links to help raise money for the Michael Martin Scholarship Fund this past week.
The 28th installment, according to early figures, compiled nearly $50,000 and will push the overall total past the $630,000 mark. The event supports student scholarships and the Trojan Club at the University of Mount Olive.
"I would really like to extend a special thanks to our vendors and suppliers as they are an integral part of making the tournament the success it is through their monetary support and participation," said tournament coordinator Neil Price, who with Friendly Mart, which is the underwriting sponsor of the tournament.
"We also want to thank those who donated to our raffle. Local businesses truly showed their dedication to the community and to the students at the University of Mount Olive. We couldn't do it without their support."
The foursome of Doug Turner, Terry Hardison, John Rovnak and Chris Lewis emerged as the first flight winners. The quartet of Doug Blake, Chris Craft, Andy Whittington and Eric Brinson claimed the second flight.
The tournament is played in honor of UMO alum and N.C. Highway Patrolman Michael Martin, who was tragically killed in the line of duty.
"This tournament continues to be tremendously popular among golfers, continuously supported by local businesses and successfully executed," said Jimmy Williams, vice president for institutional advancement at UMO.
"We are deeply grateful to tournament director Neil Price and committee members including Dwayne McKay, Bill Clingan, A.N. Martin, Steve Martin, Dean Rouse, Jimmy Adams and all of the vendors and participants that made this event happen.
"(And) having so many repeat players is just a testament to the success of this event."
