WILSON -- Na'Shir Bowden accounted for nearly 200 yards of total offense during Goldsboro's season-opening, 45-8 loss to Beddingfield on Friday evening.
A senior quarterback, Bowden completed nine passes in 33 attempts for 143 yards and threw three picks. He rambled for a team-high 48 yards on 15 rushes.
Aaron Smith provided the Cougars' lone touchdown -- a six-yard scramble in the third quarter. Smith added the two-point conversion and ended the night with 29 yards on the ground.
By the time Smith found the end zone, the game was out of reach.
"They came out of the gate swinging and by the time we woke up from it, we were down 26 points," second-year GHS head coach Bennett Johnson said. "I thought we played hard for four quarters. The learning lesson was to come out and play harder and play smarter earlier.
"I don't think any of us saw this coming. We didn't execute any phase of the game well like we did in our scrimmages. If we learn from it, it can be a blessing in disguise. If we don't, we're in danger of it happening again."
Goldsboro had 273 yards of total offense.
Senior linebacker Sterling Dodson emerged as the defensive leader with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Jameel Larkins and junior Maurice Stokes recorded eight tackles apiece.
Dayquell Dawson and Shemar Mitchell each had six stops.
The Cougars forced two turnovers.
Goldsboro (0-1 overall) is the guest of county rival Eastern Wayne next Friday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
