Gators' McCollum, Hammonds named athletes-of-the-year

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Campbell University softball signee Rachel McCollum and Trey Hammonds were selected the female and male recipients, respectively, of the Roy Whitfield Award -- which recognizes Spring Creek's female and male athletes-of-the-year.

The presentations were made during the Gators' spring sports awards ceremony, which capped the most successful athletic calendar year in school history. SC captured four regular-season Carolina 1-A Conference championships -- boys' soccer, boys' basketball, baseball and girls' soccer.

Logan Miller claimed the Doug Sanderson Memorial Award. The senior outfielder helped lead the Gators' baseball team to its first league crown since 2004.

The awards breakdown:

* Baseball: Most Improved -- Kaden Geelen. Co-MVPs -- Allen Coor, Chad Spurgeon. All-Carolina 1-A Conference -- Coor, Spurgeon, Hammonds, Miller, Will Rouse, Sawyer Smith and Hunter Walker.

* Softball: Most Improved -- Hailey Jones. MVP -- McCollum. All-Carolina 1-A Conference -- McCollum, Sarah Ford, Ashley Marriner and Alanna Price.

* Girls' soccer: Gator Award -- Madison Harkay. Leadership Award -- Kaitlyn Sullivan. MVP -- Rheanna Ried. All-Carolina 1-A Conference -- Cassie Alphin, Amber Buchan, Mackenzie Ingram, Helen Santizo, Griselda Vazquez.

* Girls' track: Coach's Award -- Ariel Brown. Most Improved -- Nicole Pitts. MVP -- McCollum.

* Boys' track: Gator Award -- Jessie Casper. Most Improved -- Cole Hernandez. MVP -- Jamal Davis.

* Boys' golf: Most Improved -- Damon Barwick. MVP -- Matthew Herring.

* Boys' tennis: Gator Award -- Brian Sato. Most Improved -- Michael O'Hara. MVP -- Carter Cipiti.
