Micah Smith had nothing planned.
So he asked to go last.
But the dunks he came up with on the fly were impressive enough to become the first winner of the Wayne County All-Star Classic dunk contest on Friday evening.
Smith edged Wayne Country Day's Joel Davis and Goldsboro's Joe Baker in a contest a collection of three high-flying athletes with and affection for emphatic slams.
"I'm a little bit more known for dunking on people than anything," Smith said. "Joel I know he's got a lot more tricks than me so I was a little worried what I would be able to do. But I pulled it out."
Smith's final dunk was perhaps the most impressive of the night. It was a two-handed slam in which he jumped over taller teammate 6-foot-4 Malik Richards.
Another Smith dunk included him throwing an alley-oop pass to himself off the back wall of the gymnasium and catching it off a bounce for a jam.
Davis got the crowd off its feet with a dunk that certainly would have won the contest had he been able to finish it.
It was a bounce pass alley-oop with a one-handed 360. Davis was close multiple times but couldn't finish.
"I haven't tried that one in a while," Davis said. "I used to be able to get it, but I just haven't been working on my dunking lately."
Baker seemingly wanted to torture his teammate Taylin Davis. On two occasions Baker jumped over Davis, once in a chair and once standing up, to complete his dunks.
