Ramirez scores nine goals, one shy of state record

Girls' soccer

Southern Wayne 9, North Lenoir 0

* DUDLEY -- Dixie Ramirez punched in a single-game school-record nine goals during Southern Wayne's 9-0, non-conference triumph over North Lenoir on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex pitch.

According to the N.C. High School Athletic Association record books, Ramirez is tied for second all-time for goals in a single game with Jennifer Carpenter (Smithfield-Selma, 1999), Tandy Banks (White Oak, 2006), Alyssa McCray (Seventy-First, 2013) and Sarah Foster (Southern Guilford, 2000).

Ramirez, who has 17 goals this season, broke the Wayne County record for single-game goals (7) set by Charles B. Aycock alum Cheyenne Warrick in 2011 and matched by Warrick again in 2012.

The Saints (4-0-0 overall) travel to Greene Central on Monday.

Wayne Country Day 3, Neuse Christian 0

* Margaret Tanner registered one goal and one assist during Wayne Country Day's 3-0, non-conference triumph over Neuse Christian.

Abbey Skinner and Taylor Willman scored one goal apiece for the Chargers, who improved to 1-1-0 overall this season.

"(A) great performance from the team," Chargers head coach Steve Ellis said. "I introduced a new system of play at practice on Wednesday, and it paid off. We looked solid and dominated the game, and really could have gotten more."

WCDS returns to action March 21 against Dixon in The Brittany, a two-day invitational contested at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson. Kickoff is 9:30 a.m.

Rosewood 6, North Johnston 6

* KENLY -- Rosewood watched a three-goal halftime advantage evaporate in a 6-6, non-conference draw against North Johnston.

Sophomore Payton Lane recorded a hat trick (three goals) for the Eagles. Lexi Mercer posted two goals and two assists, while Shelby Lemasters had one goal and one assist.

Leah Duran added an assist.

Rosewood goalkeeper Jala Holloman logged 18 saves between the pipes.

The Eagles (1-0-1 overall) open their Carolina 1-A Conference schedule Tuesday at Hobbton. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Softball

C.B. Aycock 7, New Bern 1

* NEW BERN -- Taylor Waddell tossed a complete-game two-hitter inside the pitcher's circle, and Charles B. Aycock launched defense of it Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference title with a 7-1 conquest of New Bern.

Waddell permitted an unearned run and retired seven New Bern batters on strikeouts.

Tanika Powell collected three hits and an RBI. Mackenzie Wheeler, Allison Shingleton (RBI) and Abbie Walton (RBI) provided two hits apiece. Keeley Fulgham, Georgia Parnell and Cassandra Lassiter (RBI) each contributed one hit.

Taylor Puetz drove in a run.

Aycock had only one strikeout in 37 plate appearances.

The Golden Falcons (2-1 overall, 1-0 ECC) play host to Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

North Lenoir 16, Rocky Mount 3 (5 inn.)

* ROCKY MOUNT -- Allison Montague batted a career-best 5-for-5 during North Lenoir's 16-3, non-conference drubbing of Rocky Mount.

Montague cranked out two triples in the mercy-rule affair.

Shamara Branch added two hits. Roxie Stallings, Megan Lanier, Kacie Letchworth, Shylin Flowers and Camie Flores provided one hit apiece.

The Hawks (2-0 overall) entertain Rocky Mount on Monday.

North Duplin 5, Jacksonville Northside 4 (9 inn.)

* CALYPSO -- Shaily McCarty and Alyssa Santos each connected on two doubles as North Duplin handed Jacksonville Northside a 5-4, nine-inning loss.

Rylee Pate added two hits, including a triple. Haley Brogden batted 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Pate and Brogden combined for a 10-hitter inside the pitcher's circle. Pate recorded eight strikeouts in a four-inning stint. Brogden emerged as the winning pitcher with five innings of nine-strikeout relief.

North Duplin improved to 1-0-1 overall.

Baseball

Wayne Country Day 11, Statesville Christian 1

* WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's late-inning offensive explosion propelled it past Statesville Christian, 11-1, at historic Fleming Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Chargers' Patrick Hall, Jacob Mageria, Zach Barfield and John Bryan each singled to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Two hits and an error later, WCDS posted seven runs on the board and induced the 10-run mercy rule.

Hall emerged as the Chargers' offensive leader with three hits and an RBI. John Strickland (RBI) and John Bryan (RBI) each contributed two hits. Mitch Turnage (two RBI), Parker Smith (RBI), Magera and Zach Barfield (RBI) each supplied one hit.

Turnage started on the bump and gave up one earned run on three hits in two innings. Strickland threw three innings of five-hit, two-strikeout relief and claimed the pitching win.

Wayne Country Day (3-1 overall) plays host to Oakwood School on Wednesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

South Central 6, Eastern Wayne 1

* WINTERVILLE -- South Central capitalized on a two-out, fifth-inning error and slipped past Eastern Wayne, 6-1, in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference opener for both teams Friday.

The Falcons erupted for five third-inning runs off the Warriors' miscue. The defensive bobble victimized starting pitcher Zack Smith, who scattered four hits and logged two strikeouts in a five-inning stint.

South Central had just one earned run.

Lee Daniels tossed one inning of one-strikeout relief.

Eastern Wayne (2-1 overall, 0-1 ECC) travels to New Bern on Tuesday.

JV

* Girls' soccer: Wayne Country Day 3, Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 0 -- Kaitlyn Daniels, Jasmine Jones and Langley Barnes logged one goal apiece for the Chargers. Barnes added an assist.

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 9, Northern Nash 1 -- Freshman Caleb Matthews (RBI) and sophomore Zach Mott (RBI) collected two hits apiece in the Golden Falcons' non-conference win. Christopher Turner (RBI), Nolan Harrell (RBI), Nick Aycock and Blake Gipson (RBI) each had one hit. Cody Whaley, Ryan Kearney and Gipson combined for a three-hitter and nine strikeouts on the mound.

Middle schools

* Girls' soccer: Greenwood 5, Mount Olive 1 -- Alana Kazar punched in two goals for the victorious T-Birds, who finished in a three-way tie for the Wayne County Middle Schools Athletic Conference championship in 2014. Jasmine Jones, Alliyah Mabry and Akia Drumgoole scored one goal apiece. Greenwood's next home game against Wayne School of Engineering.

* Girls' soccer: Dillard 6, Grantham 1 -- Shakia Doctor and McKayla Roberts recorded two goals apiece for Dillard. Laquanda Abdul-Jabber and TaiRonnica Davis each tallied one goal. Dillard (2-0-0 overall) plays host to Eastern Wayne on March 19.

* Earlier this week the News-Argus inccorrectly stated the Eastern Wayne soccer player Brennan Dove scored five goals in her first game. She actually scored six. The News-Argus regrets the error.
