As conference play begins next week, teams around the area are doing their best to get in any and all final tune-ups before the grueling stretch run begins.
For the Charles B. Aycock women's basketball team, this last week was a test of both the physical and mental toughness of Coach Roy Harrell's girls.
Playing their fourth game in seven days, Aycock (9-2) was tested through three quarters by Goldsboro High (2-4), but ultimately pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 56-48 win. Taylor Daniels led the way for the Golden Falcons, scoring 16 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter.
Goldsboro stayed within shouting distance all night, thanks in part to a Herculean effort from Tyona Moses. Moses finished with a game-high 32 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. The junior guard is averaging 19.8 points a game this season.
Foul trouble limited the Lady Cougars, however, as four of their players had to spend extended time on the bench because of early fouls. The fouls never allowed Goldsboro to get into a groove.
"It's very difficult [to find a rhythm]," head coach Latina Bullock said. "I tell my girls all the time that they need to move their feet and not to reach. I preach it and preach it and preach it, but we somehow forget."
Going into the fourth quarter, CBA held a close 40-37 lead. That's as close as Goldsboro would get, however, as poor transition defense led to a flurry of fast break opportunities for CBA. Aycock's front court duo of Ashley Darden (14 points) and Myleah Jones (13 points) were able to get outlet passes over the back of Goldsboro's defense, giving way to easy buckets at the other end.
It was a defensive effort that had Bullock frustrated.
"We did not play defense like the first time we played Aycock," she said. "We stopped being aggressive like we were in the beginning of the game. We let some players go by us and we missed some key box-outs."
CBA coach Roy Harrell was particularly pleased with the way that Darden played.
"I saw a bunch of big of big-time aggressiveness down in the post, both offensively and defensively," he said. "Ashley Darden played the best game she's played all year. I told her 'great game, but that's what I need every game.'"
As for the tough schedule so far, Coach Harrell was both appreciative of how it's helped his team yet also glad it's over.
"The girls are really starting to get their legs underneath them," he said. "As much as I hate playing four games in a week, it's starting to catch up. When we start playing only two games a week, that'll be really beneficial for us."
CBA's next game is on Tuesday when they return home to take on New Bern. Goldsboro is also in action on Tuesday, taking on Rocky Mount Prep at home.
