WILSON -- Defending state 1-A dual-team champion Wayne Country Day claimed two pivotal third-set tiebreakers in singles play and turned back Statesville Christian, 7-1, on day two of the Alice Cobb Memorial contested at Barton College.
It was a rematch of last year's state championship between the two perennial powerhouses.
The Chargers (9-1 overall) swept the doubles courts. The tandems of Gianna Democko-Taylor Willman, Jennifer Potts-Ally Willman and Eliza Eagles-Margaux Pope each prevailed in their respective match. Eagles-Pope defeated the Lions' Bailey Boen-Tina Perumalla 9-8.
In singles, second-seeded Taylor Willman bounced back from an opening-set loss to defeat Becky Barker 1-6, 6-2, 1-0. Potts, the No. 3 seed, split sets with Jordan Peters and took the tiebreaker.
Top-seeded Gianna Democko dropped one game against Statesville's Jacklyn Googins. Eagles handed Boen a 6-4, 6-1 setback at No. 5 singles.
Wayne Country Day's Anna Allen won her first set against Perumalla and led 4-3 in the second when tournament officials pulled the match since the overall outcome had been decided.
The Chargers return home Wednesday to face Lawrence Academy. First serve is 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College courts.
