DUDLEY -- Defending 1-AA state champion James Kenan -- without its leading returning ball carrier Al Owens -- rushed for 252 yards and four touchdowns as team during its 42-0, non-conference triumph over Southern Wayne on Friday night.
Senior Jaquan Williams carried the ball nine times for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Khalil Savage added the other rushing touchdown.
Quarterback Ken Avent III posted a near-perfect quarterback rating of 153.3 in the season opener for both teams. He was 5 for 7 for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 74 yards.
The Tigers owned a 429-178 advantage in all-purpose yards.
Tyaire Allen led the Saints' offense with 93 yards rushing.
"We are better than what the scoreboard showed at the end of the game tonight," said Southern Wayne head coach David Lee, whose team committed five turnovers. "We will get back to work and get ready for Smithfield-Selma."
Southern Wayne travels to SSS next Friday, while James Kenan is the guest of county archrival Wallace-Rose Hill in a rematch of last year's eastern regional final won by the Tigers.
North Duplin 43, Chocowinity Southside 22
* CALYPSO -- Emiliano Mora rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns in North Duplin's season-opening, 43-22 victory over Southside at H.E. Grubbs Field on Friday evening.
Mora scored on runs of 1, 5 and 3 yards.
The Rebels compiled 341 yards of total offense out of their flexbone option scheme. Quarterback JP Payton rushed for 59 yards and completed his lone pass -- a 31-yard reception by Cedric Kornegay.
Kaleb Brock rambled for 68 yards and a TD on 14 carries. Southern Wayne transfer Brion Kornegay supplied 70 yards and a TD on seven totes.
North Duplin committed four turnovers, including three fumbles.
Southside lost four fumbles.
The Rebels (1-0 overall) travel to Pinetown Northside on Friday.
Princeton 56, East Carteret 42
* BEAUFORT -- Johnny Frasier took the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and Princeton fought off East Carteret in a 56-42, non-conference shootout on the Crystal Coast on Friday evening.
The teams were nearly identical in the box score. The Bulldogs rushed for 208 yards and the Mariners ran for 210.
Frasier had 118 yards on 15 attempts and caught three passes for 61 yards. The Florida State commit found the end zone once on the ground and through the air.
Princeton senior quarterback Michael Wooten passed for 160 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another two TDs.
The Bulldogs outscored East Carteret 31-12 in the second half after taking a five-point deficit in to halftime.
Garner Cody led Princeton's defense with 6 1/2 tackles.
