WINTERVILLE -- A young and inexperienced Warriors team pulled out a tough 5-4, season-opening win over Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe South Central on Tuesday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne split the singles matches with Brennan Dove, Elizabeth Sutton and Kaycee Kemper each getting a victory. Sutton didn't allow her opponent Maria Yagne to win a single game. Kemper dropped her first set but rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win.

In doubles, Dove-Sutton swept the team of Staton-Wooten 8-0. Emily Uzzell-Kemper sealed the overall outcome with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.

"We need to continue to grow from this match and get better as the season progresses," EW coach Craig Hassell said.

The Warriors (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECC) entertain New Bern on Thursday at 4 p.m.
