Defending champ Michael Sutton had Nick Adams on the ropes.

But Sutton, who won the 2013 Wayne County Junior Amateur, couldn't hold onto his lead down the stretch. A multi-stroke advantage slipped from his grasp and Adams claimed the 2014 WCJA championship contested at Lane Tree Golf Club.

Adams finished at 2-under 70.

Sutton, who made the turn at 1-under, finished with a 1-over 73. Matt Hall posted a 2-over 74, good enough for third place. Dylan Greene, Jon Langston and Hunter Brock each carded an 83.

Chandler Joyner secured the boys' 7-Under title with a nine-hole round of 24. Tyler McKee ended up two strokes back in the three-player field.

Adam Greenwell emerged as the 11-Under champ with a 54. Chayce Joyner won the 15-U crown with a 95 and Kelly Lewis seized the girls' title. Chandler and Chayce Joyner, and Lewis each won WCJA titles a year ago.

More than 20 players participated in the half-day event, which is the pre-cursor to the annual Wayne County Men's Amateur. The WCMA tees off July 11 at picturesque Walnut Creek Country Club.

"The game of golf needs these young players," tournament organizer Jeremy Joyner said. "We need to get more kids out playing and learning the game. Golf is one of the rare sports that a person can play their entire life, so we need to get as many young people involved now to ensure the game's future."
