Rosewood clinched a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season baseball championship with a 9-2 conquest of Princeton on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles (16-4 overall, 13-1 CC) can clinch the title outright if Spring Creek loses at North Duplin later today. A Gators' victory creates a tie for regular-season supremacy and forces a Saturday afternoon contest to determine the league's No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.
"I'd rather see the kids decide it than flip a coin," SC head coach Heath Whitfield said.
A site and time will be announced Friday if that result occurs.
Brent Breedlove scattered eight hits and logged seven strikeouts during a senior night victory over the Bulldogs. The right-hander permitted two earned runs as the Eagles completed a regular-season sweep of their archrivals.
Reed Howell and Ethan Chapin (two RBI) paced Rosewood's offense with two hits apiece. Breedlove (two RBI), Jordan Gurley (RBI), Derek Neal, Bryce McKeel (RBI) and Corey Lynn (RBI) each supplied one hit.
Kahlil Warren collected an RBI.
Matt Edwards (RBI) and Jonathan Croom emerged as Princeton's offensive leaders with two hits apiece. Nick Phillips, Matt Daughtry, Tyler Ricks and Alex Harmon each had one hit.
Patrick Norris drove in a run.
Daughtry endured the mound loss in four innings of work. He yielded three runs (one earned) on just two hits and six walks. Phillips threw one-third of an inning, and Tyler Beasley threw the final 1 2/3.
Rosewood led 3-0 after three innings and Princeton climbed to within 3-2 during the top half of the fourth. However, the Eagles seized control with a six-run, fifth-inning uprising.
The Dogs concluded the year 9-14 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
