Dache has 24 kills, UMO spikers reach conference tournament finals

MISENHEIMER -- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team advanced to the Conference Carolinas tournament championship with a 29-27, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23 triumph over in-state nemesis Pfeiffer University on Saturday evening.

The Trojans (15-11 overall) travel to regular-season champion Erskine on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m. The winner claims the automatic bid to the newly-expanded NCAA men's volleyball tournament, and will host an opening-round game against the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) champion.

Angel Dache cranked out 24 kills for the Trojans, who hit .242 against Pfeiffer. Garret Dimm contributed 11 kills, while Mike Mann recorded seven kills.

Tyler Yanez dished out 39 assists. Josh Donahue emerged as the defensive leader with 16 digs. UMO had 39 digs as a team in the four-set affair.

Erskine swept Barton 3-0 in the other semifinal.

Women's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive built an eight-goal, opening-half lead and rolled past in-state Conference Carolinas women's lacrosse foe Lees-McRae, 15-6, at Amon Field on Saturday evening.

Katie McGovern scored four goals for the Trojans, who climbed to 10-4 overall and 4-2 against league opposition this season. Riann Daziel and Michelle Scannell contributed three goals apiece.

Michelle Fortier tallied two goals. Candace Corkin registered two goals and one assist.

UMO led 33-13 in shots and 17-6 in draws.

Men's lacrosse

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Matt Shields collected a career-high eight goals during the University of Mount Olive's 20-3, non-conference triumph over Walsh University on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Trojans' regular-season finale.

Dan Shields contributed two goals and five assists. Overall, 10 Mount Olive players registered at least one goal and seven players collected at least one assist on the day. The Trojans scored four goals with the extra-man advantage.

UMO led 47-32 in ground balls and won 16 of 25 face-offs.

Mount Olive (12-2 overall) returns to action April 22 in the season-ending Conference Carolinas tournament.

Softball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Senior right-hander Carly White tossed a complete-game five-hitter and logged three strikeouts as the University of Mount Olive blanked in-state Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey, 8-0, in game one Saturday afternoon.

White threw 70 pitches, including 50 strikes.

Kelsey Akers paced the Trojans' offense with two hits. Beth Overman (two RBI), Nicole Taliercio (two RBI), Kalie Smith, Jennifer Jones (RBI) and Katie Moore provided one hit apiece.

Ashleigh Mason contributed an RBI.

The Trojans stole four bases on the day and turned a pair of double plays defensively.

Mount Olive collected four first-inning runs and cruised to an 8-1 victory in the nightcap at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Overman and Moore (RBI) each batted 3-for-4.

Mason (RBI), Smith (RBI), Jones (RBI) and Kassie Lowe (two RBI) each cranked out two hits. Overall, the Trojans collected 16 hits against the Crusaders, who dropped to 9-34 overall this season.

Madison Johnston and Caitlin Ewers combined for an eight-hitter inside the pitcher's circle. Johnson surrendered the lone earned run on six hits and posted two strikeouts.

Ewers logged four strikeouts.

The Trojans (16-24 overall) entertain Fayetteville State today. First pitch is 2 p.m.

Men's track

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive men's outdoor track and field team is ranked a program-best 18th in the latest USTFCCCA Division II poll.

The ranking comes on the heels of a successful performance during the Colonial Relays. The Trojans' Dylan Lafond and Austin Steagall posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, respectively.

Angus Sinclair missed his personal best by one-hundredth of a meter in the high jump. Jacob Urys logged a school-record time of 1 minute, 53.94 seconds in the 800-meter run.

UMO is one of three North Carolina teams ranked among the top 25 along with perennial powerhouse and top-ranked St. Augustine's, and No. 23 Johnson C. Smith.
