Trojan women advance to Conference Carolinas tournament final

CONCORD -- The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team is one win away from returning to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional for the second consecutive year.
Jasmine McDonald and Kirksten Mitchell combined for 30 points during a 76-59 romp over archrival Barton in semifinal-round play of the Conference Carolinas tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
The third-seeded Trojan women (18-10 overall) play top-seeded Limestone today. Tip-off is 5 p.m. at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center.
Mitchell and Joneiqua Gary shared team-high scoring honors with 16 points apiece. McDonald posted a double-double -- 14 points, 10 rebounds. Katie Paschal provided 14 points, while Ty Wallace contributed six points and 14 rebounds.
UMO earned its third straight win over Barton for the first time since 1998.
Men's basketball
CONCORD -- Senior Dory Hines tallied 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists in his final collegiate game as top-seeded University of Mount Olive suffered a stunning, season-ending 75-57 loss to Limestone in semifinal-round play of the Conference Carolinas tournament.
Limestone plays King in the finals today.
Hines finished his Trojan career with 615 assists. Kendall Hargrove chipped in 12 points, while Dominique Reed added 10 points.
UMO finished 19-9 overall.
Softball
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- GRU Augusta held the University of Mount Olive to just one hit during a non-conference, doubleheader sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
The Jaguars took the opener 5-0 and claimed the nightcap 9-1.
Beth Overman posted the Trojans' lone hit -- a lead-off, seventh-inning single in game one. Kalie Smith drove in Mount Olive's lone run in game two.
The Trojans (9-17 overall) play host to in-state foe Chowan University on March 12. First pitch is 4 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
