Eastern Wayne withstood one J.H. Rose run on Tuesday night.
The second Rampants' spurt proved to be a knockout punch. Rose used a 22-9 run to pull away in the fourth quarter of a 91-82, Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference win in New Hope.
The Rampants' Cornell Powell led all scorers with 39 points and Marquise Braxton added 15 points.
Quavius Holloman finished with 32 points for the Warriors. Malik Richard had 12 points.
Eastern Wayne (3-10 overall, 3-6 ECC) persevered through Rose's 13-0 run in the third quarter that gave the Rampants a 57-51 lead. The Warriors closed to within 58-57 entering the fourth quarter before things deteriorated in the final eight minutes.
Despite Rose being in the double bonus with 10 team fouls, Eastern Wayne was content to fire up 3-pointers. Long rebounds and turnovers led to numerous transition opportunities for the Rampants, who needed fewer than three minutes to extend a 67-61 advantage to 83-68.
"I don't know why my kids love the 3-point shot," Warriors' head coach Chris Roberts said. "In the timeout I told my kids we were in the double bonus and to attack the basket and for some reason we wanted to shoot. That's not what we do, we spread the floor and we attack. That's what got us the lead in the first half."
Eastern Wayne continues conference play Friday at D.H. Conley.
