Fayetteville St. takes two from CIAA in-state foe WSSU

PIKEVILLE -- Fayetteville State got the best of in-state Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in-state rival Winston-Salem State on Saturday evening.
The Broncos swept a doubleheader on the Charles B. Aycock hardwood. FSU rallied from a first-half deficit to defeat the Rams, 62-59, in the women's game. FSU built an early advantage and rolled past WSSU, 74-56, in the men's contest.
Deja Middleton recorded her eighth double-double, 12 points and 14 rebounds, for FSU. Amber Calvin, who faced a box-and-1 defense all evening, emerged as the Broncos' top offensive player with 15 points.
The Rams led 14-9 early in the opening half, only to see the Broncos respond and grab a 29-27 lead at intermission. FSU boosted their advantage to 47-35 and withstood a Rams' challenge to remain unbeaten (3-0) against CIAA Southern Division opposition this season.
FSU improved to 14-4 overall.
The Broncos coaxed the Rams into 18 turnovers during the men's game.
Tyrrel Tate led FSU with 16 points, while Marquette Hill provided a career-high 14 points off the bench. Anthony Shelton tallied 12 points.
Kinston native Joshua Dawson recorded six of Fayetteville State's eight steals. The Broncos blocked three shots, and held the edge in assists (18-5), second-chance points (20-13), points in the paint (40-26), fast-break points (13-2) and bench points (36-12).
Marquez Jones led WSSU with 14 points, while Wykevin Bazemore grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds.
