Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 54,

South Lenoir 31

• Goldsboro snapped a six-game losing streak with a 54-31 win over South Lenoir on Friday evening. It was the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Cougars' Tyona Moses led all scorers with 24 points, including a 12 for 12 effort from the free throw line. Destini Covington and Sierra Barksdale scored six points apiece.

"This was the type of effort I've been looking for all season," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock said. "We finally played with some intensity. I thought we played really well on the defensive end and we rebounded well."

Meosha Johnson and Demeyia Adams both had seven points for the Blue Devils.

Goldsboro (4-9 overall, 1-0 ECC) travels to defending 2-A state champion Kinston on Jan. 17.

Princeton 70,

North Duplin 25

• PRINCETON -- Princeton reached the .500 mark with a 70-25 win over Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin on Friday night.

Savanna Massengill led the Bulldogs with 19 points and eight rebounds. Charley Cox added 14 points and Kelsey Peedin finished with eight markers.

Deja Aycock paced North Duplin with 12 points. Shaily McCarty added seven.

North Duplin (1-11 overall, 1-4 CC) visits Spring Creek on Jan. 17, while Princeton (7-7, 4-1) is the guest of league-leading Rosewood.

New Bern 37,

Southern Wayne 36

• DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne suffered its third consecutive loss in a 37-36 decision against Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe New Bern on Friday night.

Keajah Wilson led the Saints with 10 points. Sharonne Maultsby added eight markers.

Southern Wayne (10-5 overall, 1-3 ECC) travels to J.H. Rose on Jan. 17.

Boys' basketball

Princeton 71,

North Duplin 53

• PRINCETON -- Princeton used a 22-point outburst in the third quarter to pull away from North Duplin in a pivotal Carolina 1-A Conference clash on Friday night.

Colby Norris led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Michael Wooten added 15 in the win.

Cody Ivey emerged the leading scorer for North Duplin with 12 points. Brandon Patterson added nine points and Daron Goodman finished with eight.

North Duplin (4-8 overall, 1-4 CC) takes on Spring Creek on Jan. 17, while Princeton (8-6, 3-2) tangles with archrival Rosewood.

James Kenan 68,

Hobbton 34

• WARSAW -- James Kenan had 13 different players register at least one point in a 68-34 thrashing of Carolina 1-A Conference foe Hobbton on Friday night.

Antonio Smith led the Tigers with 15 points. T.J. Fullwood added nine points.

James Kenan (8-1 overall, 5-0 CC) travels to Spring Creek on Wednesday.

Ayden-Grifton 55,

Greene Central 45

• AYDEN -- Greene Central never got its offense in gear in a 55-45 loss to Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Friday night.

Kevin Ormond emerged as the lone Ram in double figures with 12 points.

Greene Central (8-6 overall, 0-1 ECC) plays host to North Lenoir on Jan. 17.

New Bern 72,

Southern Wayne 64

• DUDLEY -- Rhysante Ellis led New Bern to an Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference win over Southern Wayne on Friday night.

Ellis finished with 22 points and eight assists.

Southern Wayne (7-7 overall, 2-2 ECC) visits to J.H. Rose on Jan. 17.

Trinity of Raleigh 60,

Wayne Christian 37

• Wayne Christian fell behind by 20 points in the first half and never recovered in a 60-37 loss to Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Trinity of Raleigh on Friday night.

Kanin Preskit led the Eagles' offense with 16 points. Austin Howell also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Wayne Christian (1-10 overall, 1-6 CCC) plays host to Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

Bethel Christian 67,

Faith Christian 52

• Faith Christian endured a tough shooting night in a 67-52 loss to N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A archrival Bethel Christian on Friday night.

Victor Jenkins apped a big week with 38 points for the Conquerors. Jenkins finished with 31 points on Thursday night in Faith's win over Liberty Christian.

Faith Christian (7-5 overall) faces Raleigh Christian on Jan. 17.

JV sports

• Boys' basketball: South Central 73, C.B. Aycock 47 -- Brandon Cowan led the Golden Falcons with 17 points. Damien Darden scored 10 points, while Elijah Bryant chipped in eight.

• Girls' basketball: South Central 26, C.B. Aycock 13 -- Destiny Washington led C.B. Aycock with six points in a loss to South Central on Friday night. The Golden Falcons fell to 2-8 overall.

Middle schools

• Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 16, Lee Christian 11 -- Kasey Norris led the Eagles' attack with 11 points. Ashley Harrelson and Abi Harrelson supplied three points and two points, respectively. Wayne Christian (7-1 overall) visits Neuse Christian on Thursday.
