PRINCETON -- Archrivals Princeton and Rosewood emerged No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Wells Fargo Carolina 1-A Conference Cup race after the fall sports season.

The Bulldogs amassed 32 points on the strength of league championships in girls' volleyball and girls' cross cross country, and a runner-up effort in football.

"It's a great feeling to be in the lead at this time," PHS athletic director Marty Gurganus said. "I am very proud of our coaches and our athletes for a successful fall season."

The Eagles compiled 31 points that included a league title in men's cross country and runner-up performance in volleyball. The men's soccer team recorded a top-four finish.

Spring Creek ranks third with 23.5 points after runner-up efforts in boys' soccer and boys' cross country. James Kenan, which won the boys' soccer and football regular-season crowns, is fourth with 20 points.

Hobbton (19 points), North Duplin (18), Lakewood (15.5) and Neuse Charter (2) round out the eight-team league.

"We are in a great conference with two seasons to go," Gurganus said. "We know in order to stay in the lead we will need to work even harder. But for now it feels good to know that Princeton was the best for the fall of 2013."

North Lenoir leads Greene Central 19.5-19 in the inaugural Wells Fargo Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference Cup. The Hawks placed second in volleyball, while the Rams won the league crown in girls' tennis.

Ayden-Grifton, the regular-season football champion, is third with 18 points. South Lenoir (16 points), Kinston (14.5) and Goldsboro High (11) complete the six-team conference.

D.H. Conley seized two regular-season titles outright and shared another during the fall sports season in the split-classification Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference. The Vikings accrued 37.5 points with championships in girls' volleyball and girls' golf, and a tie with New Bern in football.

New Bern trails DHC by two points.

South Central is third with 27 points, followed by J.H. Rose with 26.5. The three 3-A members of the ECC -- Eastern Wayne (23.5 points), Charles B. Aycock (20) and Southern Wayne (12) -- round out the conference.

Eastern Wayne won the girls' tennis championship.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, have sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
