WARSAW -- James Kenan is familiar with rematches in the state playoffs.

When the N.C. High School Athletic Association introduced the "pod system" three years ago to help limit teams' travel in the opening round, it created several rematches due to geography. Last season, the Tigers drew Union in the second round and defeated the Spartans for a second time.

Tonight, the two teams will have their second rematch in as many seasons when the postseason kicks off at Bill Taylor Field. The No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Tigers downed the Spartans 44-6 on Sept. 6.

"That's the beauty of the pod system I suppose," James Kenan head coach Ken Avent Jr. said. "It seems to put the same teams in the same spots year after year."

James Kenan has won the past six meetings against Union and eliminated the Spartans from the playoffs in 2010 and 2012. Union's last win in the series was a 28-23 regular-season triumph in 2010.

Despite recent history, the Tigers know better than to look past anyone.

"Once you get to this point it's all about going out and playing your best game every week," Avent Jr. said. "Union has a good team and they have one of the best backs in this part of the state, so we better come to play."

Dezmond Faison has emerged as the Spartans' offensive leader. The senior has played running back, quarterback and wide receiver at different points this season. Faison has amassed 1,457 rushing yards and 57 passing yards through 10 games.

Traditionally known for their tight Wing-T offense, the Spartans have opened up the playbook this season and have shown multiple looks throughout recent games. No matter the formation, Avent Jr. expects his defense to account for Faison.

"(Faison), Marcelias (Sutton) and Johnny Frasier are probably the three best backs in 1-A," Avent Jr. said. "Faison is an excellent ball carrier and over the past two or three games, they have let him run some at quarterback, which changes how teams play defense."

The Tigers enjoyed a bye week during the final week of the regular season and should be well rested tonight. James Kenan's offense is led by Sutton, an N.C. State commit, who has gained 864 rushing yards and scored 11 touchdowns despite a thigh injury early in the season that limited his carries.

Dominique Barnes has thrown for 738 yards and seven touchdowns.

On defense, the Tigers rely on a group of talented linebackers -- includes Keevon Miller, Juan Hooper, Justin Boney and Tyler Pugh. The quartet has combined for 202 tackles and 22 tackles for loss.

On special teams, kicker Max Hernandez has hit one field goal and has converted 42-of-45 extra point tries this season.
