Trojans' Lafond wins Furman Cross Country Classic

FURMAN, S.C. -- Mount Olive College sophomore Dylan Lafond emerged as the individual champion during the Division II-III/NAIA portion of the inaugural Furman Cross Country Classic on Saturday morning.

Lafond ran the 8k course in 24 minutes, 12.32 seconds.

The Trojan men claimed the team crown with a 24-107 thrashing of Division III member Emory (Ga.) University. MOC's Austin Steagall (24:54.59), Aki Kitigawa (24:57.39) and Eugenio Gil (25:02.63) crossed the finish line in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively.

MOC's Erasmo Ordonez ended up ninth in 25:31.14.

On the women's side, the Trojans placed second behind Emory in team competition. Emily Shaw (23:11.9) and Bailee Henry (23:20.59) placed among the top 10 runners on the 6k course.

Megan Bucek was 17th in 23:54.99. Fellow Trojans Kelsey Valentine (23:59.04) and Crissy Petro (24:02.53) ended up 19th and 21st, respectively.

Mount Olive returns to action Oct. 5 at the annual Paul Short Invitational, which is hosted by Lehigh (Pa.) University.

Volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mary (N.D.) claimed the final two sets and handed Mount Olive College a 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, 25-18 loss on the final day of the MOC Invitational.

The host Trojans finished 0-3 in the two-day event that included defeats against Alabama-Huntsville and Armstrong (Ga.) University.

Lauren Lee and Nicole Karas each recorded a double-double against Mary. Lee provided 10 kills and 11 digs, while Karas provided 10 digs and 18 assists.

Alysha Tyms-Burnett and Carly White provided nine kills apiece. Nicole Sparks led the defense with 18 digs.

Mount Olive (0-7 overall) travels to in-state foe Elizabeth City State on Tuesday.

Men's soccer

CHARLOTTE -- Mount Olive College goalies Adam Lawrence and Aleksandar Drobac combined for 10 saves during a 6-0, non-conference loss to Young Harris (Ga.) College on Saturday.

The Trojans suffered their third shutout loss of the season.

Young Harris held a 16-4 edge in shots and 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Mount Olive (0-4-0 overall) opens its Conference Carolinas schedule at home Sept. 21 against North Greenville (S.C.) University. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.
