RALEIGH -- Spring Creek halted an 18-game skid with a come-from-behind, 24-20 win over Wake Christian on Friday evening.
The Gators entered the contest with the state's sixth-longest losing streak.
"We're thrilled about breaking that streak," SC head coach Aaron Sanders. "We made a few mistakes, but we were able to overcome those mistakes. We had drives and defensive stands where we matured as a team and that's what we've been looking for (this season).
"That's what needed to happen."
Spring Creek (1-3 overall) boosted its advantage to 17-6 with an 85-yard scoring drive that ended with DeVonte Faison's 9-yard touchdown run. Faison concluded the night with 20 yards rushing on six carries.
Wake Christian responded with consecutive TD marches and led 20-17 after three quarters play.
The Gators seized the lead with a 55-yard scoring march, capped by Anthony Russo's 39-yard gallop into the end zone. Russo rushed for 38 total yards, kicked three PATs and booted a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Tre Hammonds paced Spring Creek's ground attack with 99 yards and a first-quarter TD on 22 totes.
"The kids did several good things tonight," Sanders said.
