Princeton sweeps Spring Creek, takes first place in Carolina 1A volleyball

PRINCETON -- Spring Creek entered the gym with first place in the Carolina 1-A Conference volleyball standings within reach.

Princeton was not ready to relinquish the spot quite yet. The Bulldogs found their footing midway through the first set and defeated the Gators 25-15, 25-12, 25-12 on Thursday night.

The perennial conference front-runners showed their strength at the net from the very start.Tori Paul delivered five kills in the first set as Princeton pulled away late for a 25-15 victory.

"I think the first few points we were a little over excited," Princeton head coach Paige Renfrow said. "We had this match on our calendar all week because we knew Spring Creek was undefeated coming into today."

Savanna Massengill delivered a powerful message in the second set with four kills and a block as Princeton rolled to a 25-12 win. The third set was much the same as the Bulldogs pulled away early and held off an possible Gator rally en route to another 25-12 triumph.

"We are off to such a good start and I think we learned a lot today," Spring Creek head coach Deanna Morris said. "Princeton is very strong up the middle and we are still a work in progress. (Princeton) played extremely well today and they deserved to win."

Massengill led the Bulldogs (8-1 overall, 4-0 CC) with 11 kills and two blocks. Paul finished with nine kills. Hayley Wood added two kills and two aces.

"This was our third match in three days and I feel like we have built some nice momentum," Renfrow said. "We did a good job converting our chances when they came."

Rachel McCollum paced the Spring Creek offense with 11 kills. Sarah Ford added four kills in the defeat. Alanna Price finished with two kills and two blocks.

Spring Creek (7-1, 3-1 CC) visits Wayne Christian today. Princeton plays host to North Duplin next Thursday.
