CBA defense pitches shutout in soccer

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's offense may still be a work in progress, but the Golden Falcons defense is already on a roll.

C.B. Aycock pitched a shutout in a 3-0 win over Greene Central on at Hardy Talton Stadium on Wednesday. In two games against the Rams, the Golden Falcons allowed just one goal on seven shots.

"I think the defense is playing at a really high level," C.B. Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "We are working on things as we go, but overall I am very pleased with how we have started the season on that end."

Juninho Sanchez opened the scoring for Aycock in the ninth minute when he collected a loose ball that was a result of a well-placed corner kick by Dominick Albano. Collin Zacharzuk made the game 2-0 in the 17th minute off a crossing pass by Reece Middlerauf.

Greene Central keeper Adam Enriquez kept the Rams in the contest when he saved a penalty kick by Zacharzuk in the 24th minute.

"Offensively we are still trying to figure some things out," Adkins said. "We hit a crossbar tonight, had a penalty kick saved and had a couple other chances we didn't finish. That is what we need to work on."

Zacharzuk put the game out of reach in the 71st minute when he raced on to a pass from Sanchez and fired a shot past the out-stretched keeper for the 3-0 finale.

The Golden Falcons had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.

C.B. Aycock (2-0-0 overall) visits Wilson Fike on Tuesday, while Greene Central (0-2-1) travels to Jacksonville Northside.
