Chargers roll in CPIC tennis opener

The most-pleasing aspect of Wayne Country Day's performance over Freedom Christian wasn't either the final score (9-0) or the fact it was a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference win.

The overall consistent play and sportsmanship delighted head coach Jo Ann Logan on Tuesday afternoon.

"We did awesome," Logan said. "I have never been more proud of a group (of girls). Maybe all of the stuff I have been drilling to them ... stressing being a team, having a positive attitude and keeping each other up.

"They all had good sportsmanship today and that's what I really wanted to see."

But don't think the Chargers didn't take care of business. Six starters and three reserves combined to drop just seven games in singles and doubles play.

Top-seeded Gianna Democko, third-seeded Jennifer Potts, fourth-seeded Mollie Catherine McDonald and sixth-seeded Ally Willman each posted a straight-set shutout over their respective opponent in singles action.

Taylor Willman, the No. 2 seed, and fifth-seeded Meredith Roethling each dropped two games en route to victory.

Potts-A. Willman, Roethling-Margaux Pope and Aimee Barnes-Anna Allen completed the sweep on the doubles courts.

Wayne Country Day (3-0 overall, 1-0 CPIC) travels to Village Christian Academy on Friday. Logan expects to a strong challenge from one of the better 3-A programs in the state, and said her team will benefit from the experience.
