Sherrer reflects on Wayne County's 800th win

EDENTON -- All of the current players and coaching staff weren't around when Wayne County Post 11 resuscitated its baseball program in the late 1970s.

Since then, it's been a hard team to beat.

And it finally achieved a deserving milestone.

Wayne County picked up its 800th victory in program history with an 11-1, mercy-rule triumph over Edenton Post 40 at historic Hicks Field on Friday evening.

"It's something we talk about with the guys who come in and play for Wayne County," second-year Post 11 head coach Jason Sherrer said. "It's been set up and established well before any of us were here. It's a privilege to coach and play, and be a part of this program.

"All of the support we get from fans, parents, sponsors ... donations ... all of that kind of stuff means a lot to a lot of the guys and myself as well knowing that we have such a good program that we're playing for (each summer)."

Wayne County is 800-445 all-time.

Will he return?

Sherrer is hoping that Adam Pate hasn't played his final game for Post 11.

The incoming North Carolina freshman is taking six hours of summer school classes. He played in Wayne County's doubleheader loss to Kinston Post 43 on Tuesday.

"We're not going to stand in the way of him doing something that's really important," Sherrer said. "This was something that was brought to the forefront before we even thought about keeping him on (the team). He's done a great job for us.

"If he does leave for the rest of the year, he will be dearly missed."

Pate departed as the team leader in runs scored (23), stolen bases (11), stolen base attempts (14). He shared the lead in total hits (25), extra-base hits (8) and hit by pitch (4).

The Charles B. Aycock grad batted a crisp .472.

Ahoskie folds

Internal problems have prompted Ahoskie Post 102 officials to cancel the remainder of their Senior Legion season.

Bob Figulski, Area I commissioner, said games played against Post 102 will not be counted in either division or non-division play. Teams were asked to adjust their respective records, which further jumbled the Area I East Division race.

Ahoskie was 2-8 overall and 2-6 against Area I East opposition this season.
