SAN DIEGO -- Former Mount Olive College pitcher Tom Layne was recalled by the San Diego Padres from Triple-A Tucson during the Memorial Day weekend.

Layne is making his second stint in the Majors.

The left-hander attended San Diego's spring training camp, but was sent to Tuscon prior to opening day. He made his first MLB appearance of the season Sunday against Arizona in the bottom of the fourth inning, and retired the final two batters on a groundout and lineout.

The Diamondbacks grounded into a double play in the fifth, but touched Layne for a double and an RBI single which broke a 4-4 deadlock. Layne fanned the first two batters he faced in the sixth, was taken out of the game and eventually saddled with the loss.

Layne posted a 2-0 record with two saves in 26 appearances with the Padres last August. His first-ever Major League victory came against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The former Trojan is in the opposite dugout today against another former Trojan -- Carter Capps of the Seattle Mariners. Capps is 2-1 this season in 21 appearances, all in relief.
