KENLY -- Kyle Best continued his late-season surge and Southern Wayne moved one step closer to its third consecutive Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Best earned medalist honors with a 74 and the Saints fired a four-player team total of 327 on the Cardinal Country Club links. Southern Wayne exited with a 32-stroke advantage over second-place Cleveland.
South Johnston is 33 strokes back.
Timmy Stroud complemented Best with an 82. Julian Mitchell carded an 83 and Johnathan Barrow shot an 88.
Charles B. Aycock placed second with a 336. Josh Wheeler posted an 18-hole round of 80, followed by Dylan Mitchell (83), Mitchell Langston (85) and Matt Ivey (83).
Willis Underwood carved out an 89 to lead Eastern Wayne to a sixth-place finish. Ty Schmeltzer (95), Andrew Lockerby (98) and Jacob Sauls (105) accounted for the Warriors' team score.
Alex Brownlee recorded a 95 for North Lenoir, which didn't have enough players to log a team score.
The final ECC meet is Monday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. The top three teams will qualify for the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional at Jacksonville Country Club on May 6.
