Goldsboro High clinched a share of its first-ever Carolina 1-A Conference boys' regular-season tennis championship with a 6-3 triumph over Ayden-Grifton at Herman Park on Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars (6-1 overall, 5-1 CC) tied Rosewood for the league's top spot after the Eagles concluded regular-season play with a shutout victory over county foe Spring Creek.

The teams split a pair of tie-breakers on the John Allen Farfour courts. Goldsboro's Josh Matias prevailed 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) at the No. 2 slot, while Ayden-Grifton's Brandon Armstrong rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 win at No. 3.

Jonathan Stevens and Devin Collins each prevailed in straight-set fashion to give Goldsboro a 4-2 advantage after singles play had concluded.

Ayden-Grifton took the No. 1 doubles.

But the Cougars, directed by first-year head coach Susan Randolph, triumphed at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to secure the program's first conference championship in at least two decades. The second-seeded tandem of Matias-Vincent Spagnuolo won 8-2 and the third-seeded duo of Jon Stevens-Devin Collins pulled off an 8-2 victory.
