MOC weekend digest

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Freshman Dylan Lafond set a new school record in the men's 800 meters, and the 400-meter relay team followed suit as Mount Olive College turned in a strong showing at the Chanticleer Classic this weekend.
Lafond posted a third-place time of 1 minute, 53 seconds in the 800. Teammate Aki Kitigawa took eighth and bested several Division I competitors.
The Trojans' 400 relay -- Eric Jones, Caleb Henderson, Terio Brown and Lamonte Taylor -- broke the school record with a time of 42.35 seconds. The quartet finished third behind UNC Wilmington and UNC Pembroke.
Stedmond Hampton (52.53 seconds), Jamar Davis (53.28) and Cameron Turner (53.39) each topped their respective best times in the 400. Brown (23.19) set a personal best in the 200 and placed ahead of three Division I runners.
Eric Jones set a new PR in the 100, crossing the line in 11.38 seconds.
Three Trojans wound up among the top eight in the discus. Ryan Campbell (35.79 meters), Sebastian Jackson (35.20), Cameron Braswell (33.80) and Dorian Chadwick (26.35) all scored for Mount Olive. Jackson's mark was a personal best. Braswell set a personal best with a distance of 38.68 in the hammer throw. Jackson took fourth at 36.89 meters in the javelin.
Campbell was third in the shot put.
MOC returns to action Friday and Saturday in the season-ending Conference Carolinas Track and Field Championships at Lees-McRae College.
Men's tennis
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Mount Olive College held the lead after doubles play, but Limestone (S.C.) College emerged victorious in the first three singles matches and claimed a 5-4 victory Sunday afternoon.
It was the Conference Carolinas regular-season finale for both teams.
Mount Olive (12-5 overall, 8-2 CC) dropped to the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament. The Trojans begin defense of their tournament crown against Erskine (S.C.) on Friday in Sumter, S.C.
The tandems of Edgar Bub-Rik Wolthuis and Gabriel Santana-Brahm Moolman each picked up a doubles point. Moolman won at No. 6 singles, while Akio Mariano prevailed at the No. 4 slot.
Women's tennis
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Limestone captured the final four singles matches and edged Mount Olive, 5-4, in the Conference Carolinas regular-season finale for both women's tennis teams on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans got doubles points from Molly Sue Lentini-Francesca Ceppi and Samara Paldinho-Paula Delgado. Lentini and Ceppi each earned a straight-set victory at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.
The Saints took courts three through six.
MOC (10-6 overall, 7-3 CC) returns to action Friday in the Conference Carolinas tournament in Sumter, S.C. The tournament winner clinches the automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
