Saints place first in ECC 3-A golf meet

KINSTON -- Kyle Best and Jonathan Barrow each posted a 79, and Southern Wayne turned in a season-low 321 team score during an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet contested at Falling Creek Country Club.
Julian Mitchell and Timmy Stroud recorded 18-hole rounds of 81 and 82, respectively, for the Saints, the reigning ECC champions.
Dylan Mitchell emerged Charles B. Aycock's low scorer with a 75. Teammates Battle Burnette (82), Mitchell Langston (85) and Josh Wheeler (88) contributed to the Golden Falcons' four-player total of 330.
Medalist Patrick Stephenson fired a 72 for overall ECC leader South Johnston, which carded a 335. Cleveland (337) and Triton (352) completed the top five.
Ty Schmeltzer paced Eastern Wayne with an 89.
Alex Brownlee led North Lenoir with an 86.
After three regular-season meets, South Johnston has 17 points and a four-stroke advantage over second-place Cleveland. The Rams, Saints and Golden Falcons each have 16 points. Seven strokes separate those three teams.
