Rosewood got the game-winning goal in the 70th minute and outlasted Wayne Country Day 2-1 on the soccer pitch Friday afternoon.

The game started slowly for both teams as the week off for Spring break clearly took its toll on the players. The two teams combined for just two shots over the first 38 minutes of the game.

Rosewood (4-3-0 overall) got a fortunate bounce in the 39th minute when Logan Bill took a corner kick and watched as the ball deflected off a Wayne Country Day defender and into the back of the net.

The Eagles led 1-0 at halftime.

"I thought we played well for the first two or three minutes, but then we stopped attacking," Wayne Country Day head coach Paul Casey said. "We weren't aggressive enough to the ball, which made it tough to create scoring chances."

The Chargers opened the second half with renewed vigor.

Sarah Best evened the score at 1-1 when she fired a shot from 25 yards out and the ball floated over the Rosewood keeper.

Wayne Country Day kept the pressure on until the 70th minute when a Rosewood counter attack led to a second goal. Bill fired a crossing pass to Ayanna Potter in the 18-yard box. Potter collected the ball and scored past keeper Bailee Creger.

"We did a much better job of maintaining possession in the second half," Casey said. "But we let one get behind us and (Bill) made a really nice play to put the ball in front."

Wayne Country Day finished with an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Rosewood plays host to Spring Creek on Monday, while Wayne Country Day (4-2-1) entertains conference foe Oakwood on Tuesday.
